Down the Rabbit Hole

How my niece became a 'rabbit advocate.'

My niece Evelyn Roeloffs was in the Washington, D.C., area last week helping plan the best way to spend federal stimulus money awarded to the U.S. Geological Survey. She is a geophysicist specializing in the study of earthquakes, and she lives in Portland, Ore. Evelyn (I call her Evie) is a scientist, a practical thinker, not one given to flights of fancy, which is one of the reasons I found the story she told me about her volunteer activities as a rabbit advocate so compelling. The Rabbit Advocates organization works with animal shelters to find homes for domestic rabbits that have been abandoned or neglected.

It all began one morning... http://www.newsweek.com/id/224581/page/1

Europe Grants Animals Legal Status of Sentient Beings

Europe Grants Animals Legal Status of Sentient Beings

Date December 2, 2009

December 1st was a big day for animals in the European Union: for the first time, fish and farmed animals alike have gained the legal status of “sentient beings.” This victory promises to shape all future legal measures in Europe related to raising, transporting, and slaughtering animals.

It’s been a long time coming. Back in 1991, a campaign initiated by Compassion in World Farming got sentient being status mentioned in a non-binding treaty declaration. In 1997, sentience was bumped up to a treaty protocol, which carried some legal force. Now, this status has been granted in the main text of the Lisbon Treaty, which carries far more legal power.

I know that the previous paragraph is tediously written—as Bismarck noted, crafting laws is like making sausage, it’s best not to see it happen—but the gains won this year set vital precedent. Here’s how Philip Lymberry, who runs Compassion In World Farming, sums up the victory:

I remember how our late founder dreamed of changing the EU’s underpinning Treaty to better address the status of animals. I remember how that goal was seen as impossible, impractical, by some, even laughable. Now that dream has come true. Now to make that other dream come true; an end to factory farming itself and its terrible travelling companion, the long distance transport of animals.

I say it all the time: the most important thing to understand about animal rights victories is that they’re all about precedent. This win not only advances the possibilities for animal protection in Europe, it will also give American activists a big push in seeking similar gains in the United States. (Danke, Mahi.) Link.

for work, we had a yankee swap and i was stuck with a santa figure that pooped out candy when you pressed his head.
12.01.2009 Report
When my husband and I married, we lived in the country and he really wanted to try his hand at pig farming. My cousin, who bred and raised hogs, gave us a boar (That's a male hog for breeding purposes!) for our wedding gift. How romantic!
12.01.2009 Report
For me it had to be a birthday gift from a old friend. I got hurt at work and he got me a statue of a guy all wrapped up in bandages that had a logo on the bottom that said sue the bastards. I probably still have it some where in the attic.
12.01.2009 Report
My husband and I married in college. The first year of our marriage, I stayed up late at night to study, plus I had a part-time job three nights a week. This left little time for romance. On our first Christmas together, my husband gave me a pair of jumper-cables as a joke.
12.01.2009 Report
My grandparents sent me a Christmas gift when I was thirteen years old. It came in an attractive white square box. Inside I found the box full of bright blue translucent chrystal rocks. I did not know what it was for. First I thought it might be rock candy, but sucking on one of the rocks proved it was not rock candy. Then I thought that they had remembered that I loved gardening and that these were decorative rocks in which to force bulbs. But they were so sharp that I ruled that out Something for potpourri? They had no scent to them. I do not remember how I wrote my thank-you note. I still do not know what they were for, fifty-five years later, and it's too late to ask them.
12.01.2009 Report
Oh man, some of these posts are hilarious! I was involved in a white elephant gift exchange at work and I received a staue of a faceless monk holding a video camera. Needless to say noone tried to take my gift...
12.01.2009 Report
My boyfriend made me this shell person. It was a shell with big eyes, another shell for the nose, and it sat on a block of wood. I guess its the thought that counts.
12.01.2009 Report
I was 22, living in New Orleans at the time with my boyfriend, and it was our first Christmas together away from New York. It was Christmas Eve, and I came in from work, and there hanging in the Living room was foot tall white and yellow Cockatiel stuffed toy with a bow, sitting on a perch, hanging from the ceiling. It was such a delight to see it there, and when I got closer I realized he had something dangling from his claw, a beautiful diamond and pearl ring! It was a very special gift and made being homesick that year, a little less so.
12.01.2009 Report
I received a set of dishes when I was 13.
12.01.2009 Report
A used silver coffee pot. It was definitely not new and some relatives sent it from Italy. Did it belong to a great grandmother or something? I never did find out why they gave me a used coffee pot!

Hollywood has a 'Panic Attack!' - Uruguayan filmmaker sends in the robots...

Hollywood has a 'Panic Attack!'

A few weeks ago, a movie industry pal tipped me off to an especially cool new YouTube short by an obscure filmmaker from Uruguay. "Watch it," he said. "This guy is going to be a big star."

I've been around long enough to know that people in Hollywood make those kind of pronouncements all the time -- and they're usually 90% hyperbole. But this time my friend was right on the money. In Hollywood, an industry obsessed with discovering the Next Big Thing, often opportunity doesn't just knock -- it will beat down the door...

Jose Mujica is Uruguay's new President - Exploring Uruguay Blog - rabbitmatch's posterous

Montevideo is alive right now with horns honking and people who support the Frente Amplio yelling "Viva Pepe" in the streets. Fireworks are popping off in the distance and very dark storm clouds are rolling in soon to drench this great city.

"Pepe" is President Jose Mujica's nickname. As the new President for Uruguay, Jose Mujica will bring a colorful rule to this great nation.

Jose Mujica is Uruguay's new President

Mujica

Montevideo is alive right now with horns honking and people who support the Frente Amplio yelling "Viva Pepe" in the streets.  Fireworks are popping off in the distance and very dark storm clouds are rolling in soon to drench this great city.

"Pepe" is President Jose Mujica's nickname.  As the new President for Uruguay, Jose Mujica will bring a colorful rule to this great nation.

Jose Mujica spent 14 years in prison during Uruguay's military regime; because he was the founder of the Marxist Tupamaros guerillas.  He's friends with Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.  He's vowed to bring change to Uruguay.

In July Pepe made a speech and vowed to repent "the stupid ideologies that come from the 1970s - I refer to things like unconditional love of everything that is state-run, scorn for businessmen and intrinsic hate of the United States.  I'll shout it if they want: Down with isms! Up with a left that is capable of thinking outside the box! In other words, I am more than completely cured of simplifications, of dividing the world into good and evil, of thinking in black and white. I have repented!"

Often outspoken and causing controversy with his speeches calling Argentina "a nation of morons"... It's definitely going to be an interesting ride with Mujica as President of Uruguay.

No matter what happens, I'm sure it will be colorful.

Hi Alinda,

Thanks for sharing your photos and your opinion of Mujica. Do you have any thoughts on what his win could mean, if anything, for expats like ourselves? We have a thread going on the Exploring Uruguay Forum if you have any thoughts to share.

To Robert Krause, President SuperPets Regarding current rabbit ad

Dear Mr. Krause,

As a rabbit rescue in Los Angeles, we know First Hand what buying rabbits as 'toys' brings.  Starving, filthy, urine scalded, ear/fur mites, boney, lifeless eyes, etc etc.  Please Please don't advertise for business this way.  Below is an example of uneducated people buying rabbits as toys.

Fritz's left foot was swollen and painful from having been tethered in someone's back yard.  (link to the full story available upon request)

We hope in the future (and after this awful ad is pulled) you will work with House Rabbit Society to create win-win ads that have people adopt from a rescue where screening and education can take place beforehand.

SuperPet is doing a DISSERVICE to the animals that we are know you care for.  Please reconsider this ad campaign right away.

Thank you.
